The May Birthstone Color Will Make You Envious!

The May Birthstone Color Will Make You Envious!

by Lyn Marler

Were you born in May, the month that celebrates all things lush and green?

Even the May birthstone, the bedazzling emerald, announces that summer has arrived!

Let’s take a quick trip back in time and meet an exotic mine owner who adored emeralds. But first, we’ll explore why May’s birthstone has special meaning.

The emerald was thought to bring fertility and joy and to provide prosperity and growth to the person wearing it. It was also believed to guard against memory loss and even enhance intuition.

So, as you can see, emeralds are thought to provide many benefits. Folklore mentions these amazing powers:

  • Many believed that putting an emerald under your tongue would help you see the future
  • Others said emeralds can act as a truth potion, allowing you to tell whether or not your lover is staying true to you

Today, the calming color of emerald green is believed to relax and relieve stress.

Where did the symbolism of the May birthstone come from?

Initially, emeralds are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible in the Book of Exodus. The passages talk about a gemstone breastplate worn by the High Priest named Aaron.

The emerald was one of 12 gemstones that represented the tribes of Israel. Each gemstone had unique qualities that made the breastplate powerful. So powerful, in fact, that they said Aaron used it to communicate with God.

But, he’s not the only one to mention the benefits of emeralds…

 Let’s visit Egypt.

The first known emerald discovery was actually in Egypt in 1500BCE.

Queen Cleopatra, who ruled Egypt in 30BCE to 60BCE, believed in the emerald’s powers of fertility and rebirth. In fact, Cleopatra owned EVERY mine in Egypt, and her slaves toiled in the mines. So, Cleopatra could drape herself in elaborate jewelry, from head to toe.

As I’m sure you’ve read, she was a great beauty. But, I can’t help but wonder if Cleopatra also used her stunning emeralds to attract a couple of her famous lovers… such as Julius Caesar and Mark Antony!

So, how valuable are emeralds?

Well, emeralds are one of only four gemstones that qualify as “precious.” Diamonds are considered to be the most precious. Also included are sapphires and rubies.

Here are a few, fun facts comparing diamonds to emeralds:

1. Top quality emeralds can be worth more than diamonds per carat. But, finding a perfect emerald is actually pretty rare.

2. Emeralds aren’t as dense as diamonds, meaning they don’t weigh as much. So, a 1-carat emerald stone is larger than a 1-carat diamond.

3. High-quality emeralds are transparent – not too dark, not too light.

4. The most expensive emerald sold at auction was the Rockefeller emerald. (John D. Rockefeller originally purchased the stone in 1930, as a “nice” centerpiece for a brooch to give his wife.) In 2017, the 18.04-carat emerald sold for $5.5 million. A record-breaking $305,000 per carat!

(By the way, if you want to know why diamonds are forever, you can read about it here.)

Mad science and birthstones have something in common.

When Carroll Chatham (an American chemist) was a teenager, he tried to create synthetic diamonds using graphite and molten iron.

While experimenting in a laboratory in his garage, he caused an explosion that blew out windows in his San Francisco neighborhood.

So, Carroll changed to a safer path of growing emerald crystals. In 1935, he grew his first true emerald, which you can see at the Smithsonian Institution.

You might be surprised to learn that a synthetic emerald has the same chemical composition as a natural emerald. But, the synthetic versions are actually much harder, making them a better choice for jewelry. Both versions though can be a bit pricey.

Emerald ComfyEarrings are a beautiful and affordable alternative.

They’re made with Grade A Cubic Zirconia Crystals and 316L Surgical Grade Steel, so they’re safe and comfortable for sensitive ears.

Over a decade ago, the need to find earrings for sensitive ears became a passion. ComfyEarrings founder, Christina Gillick, had grown tired of choosing.

Beauty? Or comfort?

Sleep? Or convenience?

Happy ears? Or not?

She knew it shouldn’t be so hard to look good and feel good at the same time.

So, she began searching for earrings that were all of these things…

  • Earrings that were both beautiful and comfortable
  • Earrings that she could leave in while she was asleep and wear day and night–without needing to remove them
  • Earrings that made her look pulled together, and made her ears happy and comfy at the same time

The trail was cold. But an idea was born. And that idea became ComfyEarrings.

What began as a modest side hobby has turned into a growing business with four team members, and now a BLOG!

We are Team Comfy–and a passion for comfort is what we all have in common.

Christina

ComfyEarrings founder and co-owner

How did you find ComfyEarrings?

Well, I couldn’t find them… so we created them.

We worked with a friend at a piercing shop to create the first pair of what would later become “ComfyEarrings”. Then, I tested these “prototypes” by wearing them for more than a year before deciding to launch ComfyEarrings.com.

Which style of ComfyEarrings is your favorite?

It changes often because we’re always creating new ComfyEarrings styles. Right now I’m really loving our Stainless Bars with Gems paired with my usual go-to, our Crystal Clear Prongs.

Why do you love ComfyEarrings?

I love them because I can look “put together” without any extra effort. I put ComfyEarrings in and leave them, often wearing the same two pair for months at a time. Read our tips for long-term wear here.

What do you like about being a part of the ComfyEarrings team?

I love the teamwork. When we first launched ComfyEarrings.com, it was just Nick and me. I often worried that we might have missed a message or comment from a customer and somewhere out there, maybe someone was unhappy.

But now, with our incredible team, I don’t have to worry. Everyone works together to make sure our fans are 100% thrilled with their experience and purchase. I couldn’t do this alone… and I’m SO grateful I don’t have to!

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

When I’m away from home, I like to catch up with friends and family, try new restaurants, and take trips to explore interesting places (while keeping an eye out for wildlife). When I’m at home, I like to read, watch Netflix with Nick, and birdwatch in my backyard.

Nick

ComfyEarrings co-owner

How did you create ComfyEarrings?

Christina said she wanted to introduce her earrings to the world. But, initially, it was trial and error. Lots of testing, hunting for manufacturers, and dealing with all the things it takes to create and run an e-commerce business.

Which style of ComfyEarrings is your favorite?

Each new style of ComfyEarrings that we develop becomes my favorite! But if I had to pick only one, it would be our bar earrings. (The Stainless Steel Bars are available in gold with and without gems, and in polished stainless with and without gems.)

Why do you love ComfyEarrings?

I love seeing how happy our customers and fans get when they discover how comfy our earrings are. Especially fans who couldn’t wear regular earrings previously because of sensitive ears.

What do you like about being a part of the ComfyEarrings team?

As a founder, my favorite part is developing the next generations of ComfyEarrings and overcoming the challenges with production and sourcing.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

Just about any outdoor activity. Camping and fishing are my top picks for sure. I also like to build mini cabins among many other fun projects.

How did you find ComfyEarrings?

I worked with Christina (at another company) when she was in the early stages of creating ComfyEarrings. She sent my oldest daughter a prototype of the first earrings. My daughter loved them. She still does!

So, when Christina asked me to come work for her, I jumped at the chance.

Which style of ComfyEarrings is your favorite?

Blue Sapphires are my reigning favorites: My birthstone, of course. I also love the timeless appeal of our classic 6.0 mm Crystal Prongs.

There’s a new kid in town that I have my eye on, though. I can’t wait to try our stunning new Blue Topaz ComfyEarrings!

Why do you love ComfyEarrings?

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with jewelry. Mostly hate, though. Especially with earrings. For years, my ears pretty much stayed infected. It was painful, it was gross, and it just wasn’t worth it. There were simply no good, affordable earrings out there for sensitive ears.

I finally gave up and let them grow back together. In fact, when I came to work for ComfyEarrings I had to admit to Christina that I no longer wore earrings.

But I decided to give ComfyEarrings a try. I was skeptical. I can really relate to the customers who think nothing will ever work for them. I followed the instructions page, and I actually “re-pierced” my ears with ComfyEarrings after a warm shower.

What a difference!

They really are comfortable, durable, and beautiful. I am so thankful I was willing to try.

What do you like about being a part of the ComfyEarrings team?

I literally have the best job ever.  Christina and Nick truly value their customers and team members.

They really want you to love your earrings and wear them every day. They never stop looking for ways to improve. They sell a product I can stand behind. When I tell a customer they’re going to love their earrings, I mean it.

It feels good knowing that I can go the extra mile for our customers with their full support. It makes “coming to work” less like “coming to work.”

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I love spending time with my family and friends. My daughters are all grown, and I have two sons-in-law now. My husband and I love to get together with them to play games, watch movies, or eat… mostly eat.

There you have it.

We are Team Comfy.

Our lives have been changed for the better by ComfyEarrings. And we’re on a mission to bring comfort to you.

5 Reasons Why ComfyEarrings Make Better Screw-on Earrings Than Labrets

5 Reasons Why ComfyEarrings Make Better Screw-on Earrings Than Labrets

5 Reasons Why ComfyEarrings Make Better Screw-on Earrings Than Labrets

by Ruthie Ma

Saying ComfyEarrings are “just labrets” is like saying a Ferrari is “just a car”. Sure, the two share some similarities, but they also have very distinct differences. Yes, ComfyEarrings and labrets are both forms of jewelry. But, that’s pretty much where the similarities end.

You see, years ago when ComfyEarrings creator, Christina Gillick, began looking for truly comfortable earrings, she discovered labrets and gave them a try.

While wearing two pair every day and night, 24/7, for a year, she discovered several ways to make them more comfortable and a better option as screw-on earrings. Working with her husband and co-owner, Nick, she modified labrets into more comfortable “earrings” and the first-ever “ComfyEarrings” were born.

However, the story doesn’t end there.

Through customer feedback, Nick and Christina quickly discovered that fans didn’t want “modified labrets”. They wanted comfortable EARRINGS.

So, Nick and Christina tweaked their initial design further… testing and redesigning, making ComfyEarrings more and more comfortable with each improvement.

Using a decade worth of feedback, from thousands of customers, they created the most comfortable earrings on Earth.

Here are five ways ComfyEarrings are specifically designed to be different from labrets:

1. Labret styles vary widely and are not consistent or interchangeable.

It’s true that labrets, which are lip rings, do have flat backs. However, they’re all different and vary in size, shape, and design. Some labret backs are very wide (and heavy). Some labret backs are super thick, and others are super thin. Plus, the post width (or gauge) of labrets can vary (more on that below). So, which labret variation will work best – and be most comfortable – for your ears is anyone’s guess.

However, ComfyEarrings are specifically designed to be comfortable in your earlobes 24/7. You can even comfortably wear them when sleeping!

We know this because, through years of development and customer feedback, we found the perfect size and weight for our exclusive Comfy flat back.

Early on, our flat screw-on backs were too thin. Fans asked for us to make them thicker to help with grip while inserting. We listened and, little-by-little (to keep from making them too heavy), we found the ideal design.

Now our exclusively designed screw-on Comfy flat back is only 6.0 mm wide and 2.0 mm thick!

This combination:

  • Allows for maximum comfort and balance.
  • Eliminates pressure on your ears.
  • Covers the end of the post to protect your neck from painful pokes!

Plus, all ComfyEarrings styles are interchangeable. If you’re using labrets as flat back earrings, one lost piece may mean tossing out the pair (two labrets) because you don’t have a replacement matching labret.

Not the case with ComfyEarrings.

Because all our current styles have the exact same post width (18g) and the same screw-on Comfy flat back, ComfyEarrings are completely interchangeable. If you lose a back, simply use one from another pair of ComfyEarrings or contact us here to get a replacement.

2. Labrets can stretch your earlobes with their bigger gauge.

It’s becoming more popular to use labrets in earlobes as a kind of “life hack” for more comfortable earrings. Again, this is where Christina started herself, 10+ years ago.

But when she launched the first style of ComfyEarrings, she quickly found out that fans did not like the size of the labrets post width for their ears.

That’s because, according to Painful Pleasures, labrets tend to come in bigger gauges, like 14 gauge (14g) or 16 gauge (16g). You can even order them as large as 12 gauge (12g). Because of this size difference, changing to labrets from traditional earrings can cause your piercings to stretch.

That’s why ComfyEarrings are designed to be as much like traditional earrings as possible, right down to the gauge…

All styles of ComfyEarrings have 18 gauge posts, the same as many traditional earrings (which are usually 16, 18, or 20 gauge).

This means the ComfyEarrings posts are thin enough to be worn in your regular piercings without stretching your earlobes, while also thick enough to accommodate the post threading (for our screw-on Comfy flat back).

Case in point: some of our biggest fans are children.

3. Your style options are limited with labrets.

Because labrets are made for lip piercings, wearing them as earring studs means you’re limited to designs that are meant for your lip. For instance, it’s not popular to wear big, beautiful prong-style studs on the lips. So, naturally, labrets are not usually available in those designs.

On the other hand, because ComfyEarrings are made for your ears, they come in traditional earring stud styles and sizes. For instance, we carry prong-style stud earrings, pearl stud earrings, bezel stud earrings, and bar stud earrings.

Plus, fans with multiple piercings (who want a graduated look) have so many options to choose from! The most popular choice is our 4.0 mm and 6.0 mm crystal prong and pearl styles.

The Bezel and Ball ComfyEarrings also come in a 4.0 mm size and are perfect for those who prefer a more subtle look and smooth earring design.

The newer Bar ComfyEarrings have the same post and back with an 8.0 mm long bar. Any of our four bar styles combine well with all our other ComfyEarrings styles!

4. Labrets are backward!

Because labrets are designed to wear in your lip, it makes sense that they would insert from the back (the inside of your mouth). But, wearing them in your earlobes means you have to put them in backward (pushing the post through your piercing behind your ear). Then you must screw the front part of the earring onto the post.

Originally this seemed like a good design for ComfyEarrings too. But, through our relentless testing process, we discovered that fans did not like inserting their screw-on earrings from behind!

The most common fan request was, “I want these to insert from the front, like traditional earrings.”

Well, we heard you loud and clear and flipped the design. The extremely positive feedback we received in response told us that we’d made the right choice.

So, now all our ComfyEarrings styles are designed with the same screw-on Comfy flat back. They insert from the front, which makes the process easier and faster. Plus, they’re easier to grip and tighten, so they don’t get lost.

5. Labrets are sold one-by-one… not in pairs!

Again, labrets are designed to wear in your lip. So, it makes sense that they would be sold individually (or one at a time). To use them as earrings, you have to order two.

So, while a labret of the same quality (316L Surgical Grade Stainless Steel) might be $10-$15 (or more with grade A CZ gems like ours), you’re only getting one piece of jewelry!

Multiply that by two (for your two ears) and you’re up to $20-$30 for a basic pair of “earrings”.

Compare that to ComfyEarrings (which were designed for your ears, so they’re always sold as a pair). Our “Everyday” collection is only $18-$20 per pair — and less when they’re on sale!

Plus, you can save even more! For example, right now you can sign up below and save $5 on your order today!

So, there you have it. Five ways ComfyEarrings are specifically designed to be different from labrets. Thanks to Christina’s search for comfort and her mission to create the best solution possible, everyone can wear the most comfortable earrings on Earth!

And remember, ComfyEarrings are made from the best, 316L Surgical Grade Stainless Steel. So, they’re safe and comfortable–even for sensitive ears. (Plus, they will NOT rust, discolor, or turn you green!)

You no longer have to choose between style and comfort. Now you can have both.
